The meaning of moo-do/budo
We had our End of the Year Party on Saturday, December 12 at A'Roma Ristorante in La Palma, CA. Our party started at 2pm with set-up and socializing. Several students and parents came early to help set-up. We were also joined by Grandmaster Chan-Yong Kim and Grandmaster Nam-Ku Yun and their spouses. Our party officially started close to 3pm with our 4th Quarter Results from testing.

Nathan & Elmier Penid were promoted to 2nd Kub, Red Belt. Jasmine Adair was promoted to 5th Kub, Green/Blue Belt. Marc Gutierrez was a surprise and received another double promotion to 6th Kub, Green Belt. Kristen Gomez was promoted to 6th Kub, Green Belt. A big surprise was Matthew Benson who received a triple promotion to 7th Kub, Yellow/Green Belt. The last triple promotion in our school was Terry SBN in 1999 to the same rank. Aidan Buchanan also received a double promotion to 8th Kub, Yellow Belt. Steven Schuster was promoted to 8th Kub, Yellow Belt. Ria Agrawal & Akanksha Sancheti were both promoted to 9th Kub, White/Yellow.

Grandmaster Kim gives a speech
Before giving out our special awards, Master Amsell talked about each award. The Top Child, Junior, and Senior award are strictly based on score. The Most Dedicated award is given to someone who puts in a lot of time into the class (normally outside of class). The Leadership award is given to someone who shows a good example and helps lower ranks. All of the instructors also had words of encouragement to the recently promoted and students in general.

Top Child was Matthew Benson, Top Junior was Marc Gutierrez, Top Senior was Steven Schuster, Most Improved was Elmier Penid, Most Dedicated was Matthew Benson, and Leadership was Jasmine Adair.

Grandmaster Yun gives a speech
Our testing results were followed by Master Amsell's end of the year speech which talked about our school's history and philosophy as well as what the goal is of martial arts training. That was followed by a speech by Grandmaster Yun and Grandmaster Kim on their views on martial arts training and what they felt was important to share to all the students & instructors in attendance.

Next, was the special presentation of our 2009 Year in Review video made by me. I often start the video long before our end of the year party. This year I added a few new twists and turns that I have never attempted before. I started work on the video on October 18 and finished it on December 9. The video reinforced to all in attendance how far we've come since our 2008 End of the Year Party. (Look for an upcoming article for more on our 2009 Year in Review video)

Matt shows his triple promotion
Up next was our special End of the Year Awards. The first two awards were presented by Grandmaster Yun and Grandmaster Kim to the Most Supportive Parent of the Year. This was a new award that resulted in a tie. The awards went to John B. Adair (Jasmine's dad) and Maria Eliza Fajardo (Nathan & Elmier's mom). They also received TKD keychains that had the belt color of their child/children. The next award was Most Dedicated of the Year award that went to Marc Gutierrez for not only attending every event since he joined, but also coming to testing shortly after surgery to help out in any way he could. He also received Poomsae flash cards. The next award was for Most Improved Student of the Year. The award also resulted in a tie and went to Jasmine Adair and Kristen Gomez. They also received a TKD Teddy Bear. The final award was Student of the Year. This was the only award who received a near unanimous vote from all instructors, examiners, and visiting instructors. Our 2009 Student of the Year went to Elmier Penid.

Our party concluding by comments from each End of the Year award recipients, Vicky A. Tanner, Ava Nguyen, and Steve. Matt also decided to give a speech and tell everyone about how he used his belt to learn how to punch correctly by me. For the majority of our students & instructors the party ended there. However, for Vicky, Nathan, Elmier, Maria, Jasmine, Stacy, John, Marc, Melanie, and me the party continued to Matt's house where there was a block party celebrating the Christmas lights of Dallas St. My night ended after Marc and his mom got a tour of my new pad. -LSA
